Born with a condition that has stayed with him through every year of his life, fourteen-year-old Manju Aralikatti, son of Sunita and Vittal from Belagavi, Karnataka, is living with flexion contracture of the right knee with 90-degree fixed flexion deformity. His knee remains bent and cannot straighten, making simple things like walking, playing and sitting comfortably a daily struggle.

Manju is the eldest of three brothers, and the family of five has stood beside him since the day he was born. Lately, he has not been keeping well and the pain has become harder for him to bear. Frequent hospital visits and his health have also kept him away from school, taking away the everyday routine other children his age enjoy.

Doctors at Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital, Bengaluru, Karnataka (approx. 500m from Bangalore Cantonment Railway Station), have proposed medial hamstring lengthening, posterior soft tissue release, capsulotomy of right knee, prophylactic common peroneal nerve release and Ilizarov ring fixator application. The estimated cost of treatment is Rs. 4,50,000 (Rupees Four Lakh Fifty Thousand Only), an amount that feels impossible for the family to arrange.

Vittal works as a driver and Sunita looks after the home and their three sons, but the family’s monthly income is very small. Managing daily needs is already a challenge, and a surgery of this cost is far beyond their reach. Even so, they refuse to give up on Manju. With the right treatment and support, he can finally look forward to a life without pain.
