The family has already lived through a tragedy that shook them to their core. The sudden and heartbreaking loss of Dushmanta's father left Mandakini alone to hold everything together. She now steps out each day to work in other people's homes, taking up whatever she can find, because there is a sick child waiting for her and a treatment that cannot wait. Through all of this, she is also raising a younger daughter who is far too little to understand why her brother is so unwell.

Doctors at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, Bhubaneswar, Odisha (around 10 to 12 kilometres from Bhubaneswar Railway Station), have recommended an Autologous Stem Cell Transplant as the line of treatment. The estimated cost of treatment is Rs. 15,00,000 (Rupees Fifteen Lakh Only).

This is a family that has already been pushed to its edge. Mandakini has no steady income, no savings, and no one to lean on. Yet every morning she wakes up and keeps going, for Dushmanta.
