The wrinkles and lines on the face are not a sign of weakness and frailty, but wisdom. Behind those creases, lie decades of life experiences and treasures. They can act as a bridge toward a better future. It is said that those who have forgotten history are doomed to repeat it. In the same way, it can also be said that the generation that doesn’t respect the elderly would create a cursed future.

World Senior Citizen’s Day was first held on 21st August in 1991, to increase awareness of health deterioration and elder abuse. It was also a day to recognise and acknowledge the older people of society.

It is said that one in every six senior citizens faces some kind of abuse globally. Some studies also estimate that elder abuse is around 61.7% in India. These numbers might be higher due to various cases going unreported.

Oftentimes, this abuse is done by the hands of their own children, as children often start to view their parents as ‘burdens’. Some children also abandon their parents by sending them to old-age homes.

Looking at society, it is not surprising that 20.5% of elders have some kind of history of mental health. So, it can be concluded that we as a society have failed our elders.

So, what can be done to help our elders?

The most obvious way to help elders is to donate to NGOs and Old-Age Homes. There are a lot of NGOs working for the betterment of elder people, here is a compilation of some of them. You can even help old age homes in your locality.

If you see or hear about elder abuse in your surroundings. It is your duty as a citizen to report such cases. Not only will you be creating a safe environment, but also inspiring more people to take a stand.

Loneliness of a senior citizen Child Help Foundation

To combat the loneliness of senior citizens, you can hold some community activities in your society. These activities can include games, exercises and cultural activities. This will build a tight network of senior citizens, and they will find solace in the company of each other.

Teenagers and children can also spend some time with their elders to help them adapt to changing times. They can teach them about new technologies, talk to them about current trends etc.

Similarly, events that celebrate elders can also be held. You can invite elders to share some insightful and inspirational stories, that can create a deep impact and connection with the younger generation.

Child Help Foundation sympathises with the struggles of the elderly. Not only that but our crowdfunding partner, Filaantro, also raises funds for the treatment of senior citizens and old-age homes.

Thank You for taking the time to read the article. Make sure to comment on how you are making the world a better place for the elderly. Do remember to share it with all your friends and family members to make them aware.
