While March 8 is celebrated as International Women’s Day, this one day is not enough to celebrate the contributions of women all over the world. So, in order to inspire little girls, the entire month is celebrated as Women’s History Month.

The accomplishments and deeds of historical female leaders like Rani Laxmibai, Joan of Arc and Rosa Parks have been sung for time immemorial. Resulting in modern-era living-breathing female leaders getting overlooked.

So, here are five female leaders of the world, who have earned a name for themselves through sheer wits and foresight.

    The people of New Zealand and the world let out a collective sigh when they found out that the young prime minister of New Zealand had resigned. And rightfully so, as Jacinda Ardern made a name for herself as one of the world's most beloved heads of state. Adopting a feminine empathetic form of leadership, she united the entire country in grief after the Christchurch terror attack. Not one to stand by, she immediately announced gun regulations to ensure that such an attack never took place. She also quickly curbed the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in less than 2,500 deaths in the island nation. She also made sanitary products free for school children.

    Being Elected at the mere age of 34, Sanaa Marin is one of the youngest heads of state in the world. In order to introduce gender equality, Sanaa Marin introduced a bill which entitled a father to an equal number of parental leaves as a mother. She also paved the way for Finland’s entry into NATO, thereby securing the country from Russia. Her handling of the COVID-19 pandemic was also praised, as the country only experienced around 8,000 deaths. She also aims to make the country carbon-neutral by 2035.

    Katrín Jakobsdóttir has been serving as the prime minister of Iceland ever since 2017. In her tenure, she has managed to extend the already generous parental leave for the citizens of the Scandinavian country. Not satisfied with the strides made by Iceland’s gender wage gap, she made it illegal for men to be paid more than women for the same job. She was also among the female leaders who stood out as a great example of pandemic management, with the country only experiencing 293 deaths.

    Coming ahead as the ally of LGBTQ+ rights, Tsai-Ing Wen was the key proponent of legalizing same-sex marriage in Taiwan, Taiwan was the first country in Asia to make same-sex marriage legal. She also reformed the country’s labour policy, reducing the work week to 40 hours per week, with one compulsory rest day and one flexible rest day. She has also committed to attaining a net zero carbon target by 2050.

    The Prime Minister of Uganda, Robinah Nabbanja has been in office ever since 21st June 2021. Amidst the sea of doubters, Robinah would go on to prove all of them wrong, as she has been a great leader of the country. 95% of the beneficiaries received the COVID-19 relief fund, which has been dubbed as the ‘Nabbanja Money’. She quickly took action against corruption, as she fired four of her own staff members, upon finding the relief materials to be inadequate during Kasese Floods.
