23rd April has been designated as “English Language Day’ by the United Nations. The date 23rd April was selected as it is the birth and death anniversary of William Shakespeare, one of the greatest English writers to ever walk on this earth.

The day is observed to promote equal use of all six official languages, which are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. Each language has its own designated day.

Even though the English language has no origin in India, it is still recognized as one of the two official languages in India. Efforts were made to adopt Hindi as one solitary official language, but due to hindrances faced by non-Hindi speakers in Southern States and North Eastern States, English was chosen as the official language, side-by-side with Hindi.

The aforementioned sentence itself states the importance of English. Even if we have no plans to move outside the country learning English is important as it allows us mobility to move in Southern and Northeastern states. English is also widely used in professional settings in India, making it extremely important for job prospects.
