Childhood is the most entertaining and enriching part of our life. We get the pleasure to enjoy each moment of our life, it is a time of innocence, joy, and exploration with our near and dear ones but then there are certain sections of children who are neglected from enjoying this phrase. For them, the harsh reality is to work as labourers. Child Labour remains a ubiquitous issue that robs children of their right to education, health, and a proper childhood.
The International Labour Organization(ILO) launched the (ILO) launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 to focus attention on the global extent of child labour and the action and efforts needed to eliminate it. Each year on 2th June, World Day Against Child Labour brings together governments, employers and workers' organisations, civil society, as well as millions of people from around the world to highlight the plight of child labourers and what can be done to help them.
To date, according to International Labour Organization(ILO), the number of child labour has risen to 160 million worldwide and 79 million children are performing hazardous work Several children aged 5-17 years are engaged in child labour and unsafe work. Child labour is work carried out to the detriment and endangerment of a child, it deprives children of schooling or requires them to assume the dual burden of schooling.
Child Labour includes All “unconditional” worst forms, such as slavery or practices similar to slavery, the use of a child for prostitution or illicit activities, separation from their families, exposed to serious hazards and illnesses and/or left to fend for themselves on the streets of large cities. Child Labour also has severe consequences on the physical, emotional, and cognitive development of children. The physical toll of hazardous work puts their health and safety at risk, leading to injuries, illnesses, and even fatalities.
Children are left alone to work in hazardous places and the cause of letting children being labourers is poverty, it is one of the main causes of child labour in India. Poor economic conditions force parents to depend on their children to help them inside and outside their homes. These children are forced to drop out of school and become a source of income for their parents. Unemployment is also another cause of child labour especially due to natural calamities, pandemics, war, and loss of parents forcing children to work and support their families.
Children are the future of our country, thus providing them with an environment that encourages learning, development, and growth is of the highest importance. Child labour is a barrier that keeps children from having a safe and healthy childhood even after decades.
