“It was the happiest day of my life when my daughter Shrutika was born. I named her after Goddess
Parvati, because I truly believed that she was a blessing from Parvati. At the age of six years, she has
more sorrows than any child around her. She cries when she sees everybody playing and having fun while
she has to visit hospitals and undergo treatment.”-
While most girls of her age are busy living a carefree life and playing around with their friends, such joys
have been unknown to six-year-old Shrutika. She has the unfortunate fate of battling Acute
Promyelocytic Leukemia, which has drained all the happiness out of her life.
Her father, Vasant Naik works as a farmer in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. His salary of Rs 4000/- per month is
barely enough to feed a family of four. When his daughter Shrutika suffered from severe fever and signs
of weakness and found no relief for a week, they took her to the hospital. On consultation at the
Kolhapur Cancer Center, the doctors said that Shrutika’s treatment would cost around Rs 8,00,000 /-
(Rupees Eight Lakhs only). And she would have to go through rigorous sessions of chemotherapy for
three years. While his daughter is battling for life, Vasant has resorted to taking loans to manage the
expenses of treatment. Till date, he could manage to arrange only Rs 40,000/- for his daughter’s
treatment.
Eight lakhs is not only the price of Shrutika’s treatment. It is the cost of her smile, her childhood, her
jovial nature. It is the price of all the fond memories she has spent with her family and the bright future
