“My wife and I are thalassemia minor but we knew nothing about it till my younger daughter had to
suffer because of it. It is a painful truth to face that we are the reason our child is fighting for her life.
Sara has been undergoing monthly blood transfusion since she was three months old but now doctors
say she will have to undergo a bone marrow transplant. Bad times do come in life and I am sure we will
make it through. All I am asking for is a little help from you so that we can take on our journey to treat
my daughter. Please support us.”-
Sara Shibanya Swain is the daughter of Mr. Nirod Kumar Swain and Mrs. Sabita Pradhan of Sagadailo,
Odisha. The father is a vegetable vendor who earns around Rs. 7,000/- per month to support his family
of four. The education and health needs of the children sometimes doesn't suffice in the minimal family
income. They are helped by their extended family when they find themselves in such a situation.
However, this time the amount is huge and they are finding it very difficult to source help.
Sara was first diagnosed with Thalassemia major when she was taken to the hospital at three months of
age for a regular checkup. The doctor noticed that the baby was pale and he suggested that they check
her hemoglobin. An extremely low hemoglobin of 4.5 led the doctors to conduct further tests where the
diagnosis was reported. She was recommended monthly blood transfusion till she turns old enough for a
transplant. During this period, Sara suffered from rashes, tremors, fever, and weakness. Her father
reported that Sara was very sensitive to any treatment that she received.
Sara is currently being treated at the Narayana Health City, Bangalore. The proposed treatment for her
is a Bone Marrow Transplant (Haplo-identical) which costs Rs. 40,80,000/- (Rupees Forty Lakhs and
Eighty Thousand Rupees Only). One of the parents will be the donor for the patient. But they are
helpless when it comes to financial arrangement. The family is trying very hard to source money by
mortgaging the little property that their ancestors owned. They need your support to fund the
treatment and bring their daughter out of this severe medical condition.
