“Mounika was born with medical issues. I do not know what it is called but the doctors have been treating her for a very long time but she hasn’t seen any relief. We are now in Bangalore for her treatment but the cost for it came to us as a shock. I do not know where to go.”-

Mounika is a 13-year-old girl belonging to Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh. She is suffering from Congenital Lumbar Kyphoscoliosis and is currently admitted in Bhagwaan Mahaveer Jain Hospital, Bangalore, Karnataka. She was treated multiple times in a local hospital in her village but recently, her condition became very critical and she started facing severe pain. The doctors then recommended her parents to take her to Bangalore for the treatment. The proposed treatment is D8-ilium pedicle screw instrumentation deformity correction vertebral resection and fusion and the estimated cost of the surgery is Rs 4,50,000.

Congenital Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine that results from anomalies or abnormally developed vertebrae. This curvature often progresses and results in diseases or severe neurological deficits. They are prone to cardiac abnormalities, genito-urinary abnormalities, and incidence of intraspinal anomalies.

Mounika’s father Siddappa is a farm labourer who earns a meagre wage of Rs 10000/- for a family of five. Aruna (Mounika’s mother) also works in farms on demand. The parent’s unawareness and illiteracy leaves them no choice but to be on the mercy of whatever comes their way.

“The doctors straight away asked for Rs 4,50,000/-. Who will give me this much money? I somehow managed to arrange Rs. 6000/- and come to Bangalore for my child’s treatment. I cannot think of anything now. I feel so helpless. My daughter’s life is at stake. We will never be able to afford this surgery and she will have to suffer lifelong.
