Hunger is a global issue. No country is safe from it, it doesn’t discriminate between race, religion, caste, gender or sexual orientation. Hence, we have to come together to defeat it as well.
The World Hunger Day was founded by The Hunger Project in 2011 to call attention to the global food crisis. It is celebrated annually on 28th May. The organization provides food and nutrition to the people who need it the most.
To observe World Hunger Day, we will be looking at five ways we can contribute to this movement of ending the hunger epidemic.
- Organize Community Kitchens for the Poor
- Volunteer
- Donate
- Reduce Food Waste
- Educate
Gather your friends and family members to set up a community kitchen in your area. Raise funds from society to buy ingredients and distribute this food to the poor and vulnerable in your area. You can also buy it from a restaurant but remember to buy it from a local restaurant rather than a multinational company. So that your efforts also help to boost the local economy.
If you don’t have enough resources to set up a community kitchen, you can volunteer for one and help them with your labour or manpower. These organizations are always welcome to have more hands because more hands mean more reach. Be sure to look for community kitchens or food banks in your area.
There are many regions in the world which are hit by war, famine, genocide and drought. Aid organizations are working round the clock to make sure food reaches this place. You can donate to these organizations on the occasion of World Hunger Day. UNRWA is one such organization working to help refugees.
Many people just throw away food when they don’t have use of it or simply don’t want it. If we divert food waste from landfills to an innovative food waste treatment system then we can stop almost 11% of Greenhouse gas emissions. So make sure to send your remaining food to your domestic maid or anyone around you who requires it.
Educating yourself and those around you is also a big step you can take towards helping the cause. You can learn about the causes of world hunger to better understand the issue. You can also educate others around you through social media.
