Onam- the Harvest, Happiness and Prosperity Festival is celebrated worldwide on 29th August 2023. The auspicious festival of Kerala began on August 20 and will end on August 31. Onam, also known as Thiru-Onam or Thiruvonam, is a ten-day celebration that marks the return of King Mahabali/Maveli and is marked by great grandeur across the realm.
It is a time when the entire state is decked up with Athapookkalam (Floral Rangoli) and lights. Visitors to Kerala during the festive season have the opportunity to experience the hospitality and culture of the state on a first-hand basis. With the boat races, Onasadhya, Athachamayam (cultural fiesta), Pulikali (Leopard Dance), Kummattikali (Mask Dance), and Thumbi Thullal (Butterfly Dance) the festival also showcases artistic and cultural diversity.
Legend has it that King Mahabali conquered the Gods and established his authority over the three worlds. Although he was a clever and kind leader, the Gods were concerned about his popularity. They walked up to Lord Vishnu and begged him to assist them. As a result, Vishnu assumed his fifth form, that of the dwarf Brahmin Vamana.
Vamana, a Brahmin, visited King Mahabali. The kind King granted him his wishes and vowed to do the same for him. Vamana asked for "three pieces of land." Then, in his first and second steps, he expanded to fill the heavens and the underworld. King Mahabali gave God his head when Lord Vishnu's fifth avatar was ready to take his third stride. King Mahabali was given the authority to reign his kingdom till the end of the Kalyuga and the satisfaction of visiting his realm and subjects at Onam by Lord Vishnu, who was pleased with his sacrifice. Every year, Malayalees across the globe, celebrate Onam to mark the beloved King Mahabali’s homecoming.
This celebration not only marks the bountiful harvest but also showcases the rich tapestry of Kerala’s vibrant culture. From the first Pookalam graces the threshold, the atmosphere is infused with a sense of artistic flair and devotion. Then there’s the Sadhya, the grand feast that every Malayalee waits to begin, it captures the essence of Onam on a banana leaf with at least 26 dishes prepared by the family members. Each dish carries the legacy of generations and is served according to the traditions, the explosion of flavours, the spices and the sheer variety of dishes create a symphony on the taste buds.
Onam is more than simply a rainbow of hues and tastes. It's an experience that brings together friends, neighbours, and even total strangers, building a sense of community that knows no bounds. It also serves as a reminder to uphold traditions while welcoming change.
Child Help Foundation along with Filaantro celebrates Onam with Grandeur across the country. The team dresses up in traditional attire, distributes sweet dishes and makes Pookalam (Floral Rangoli) along with fun games. Everyone participates in this festival with a lot of love and enjoyment.
