Mizoram Foundation Day: Celebrating the Forgotten Beauty of India

In 1986, the Indian Parliament adopted the 53rd amendment of the Indian Constitution, which allowed for the creation of the State of Mizoram on 20 February 1987, as India's 23rd state. Before the formation, Mizoram was a part of Assam until 1972, after which it was carved out as a union territory.

Since then, 20th February is annually celebrated as Mizoram Foundation Day. The statehood was established due to the efforts of the Mizo National Front (MNF), it also led to the end of insurgency and established a democratic government.

The day is celebrated with cultural programmes, traditional dances, music performances, sports, flag hoisting and other festivities.

To celebrate the Foundation Day of Mizoram, we are going to be looking at some amazing facts about the state.

  1. Mizoram’s Name Literally Means “Land of the Hill People”
  2. The name Mizoram is derived from two words, Mizo meaning native inhabitants and Ram meaning land. So the name literally translates to Land of the Hill People.

  3. People are Disciplined When it Comes to Traffic Rules
  4. Numerous photos and videos of Mizoram’s traffic discipline circulated on the Internet in 2022. People rarely honk or overtake other vehicles. Drivers also stick to their lanes, cars are seen on the left side, while bikes are always on the right side of the road.

    The cuisine of Mizoram is influenced by the region's agrarian and hunting-gathering traditions. Bai, Koat Pitha, Vawksa Rep, Bamboo Shoot Fry, Panch Phoran Tarka, Chhum Han and Misa Mach Poora are some of the popular dishes of Mizoram.

  8. Called the Land of Blue Mountains, Mizoram is famous for its evergreen hills and dense bamboo jungles. The state offers a wide array of festivals, dances, handicrafts, flora and fauna, natural scenic beauty and a pleasant climate. Tam Lake is an ideal picnic spot and the facility to ride in the boats makes it even better. The Vantawng Fall is Mizoram’s highest waterfall at 750 ft high and the Mizoram State Museum is a treasure house of knowledge of the culture and history of Mizoram.

  9. It is one of the most literate States of India
  10. The literacy rate of Mizoram sits at 91.33 per cent. The male literacy rate sits at 93.35 per cent while female literacy is at 89.27 per cent. The literacy rate has been credited to widespread government programmes.
