October 17 is annually observed as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, ever since 1992. The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty promotes dialogue and understanding between people living in poverty and their communities, and society at large.
According to the Global Multidimensional Poverty Index 2023, 1.1 billion of 6.1 billion people are living in abject poverty, across 110 countries. In India, the rate of poverty has declined from 24.85% in 2015-16 to 14.96% in 2019-2021.
There are a lot of reasons for poverty. Some of these include Rise in Population, Low Productivity in Agriculture, Low Utilization of Resources, Increasing Costs, Unemployment, Social Factors, Political Factors, Unequal Distribution of Income, and Regional Poverty.
To mark the occasion of International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, here are some ways you can contribute to eradicating poverty:
- Sponsor the education of an underprivileged child
- Purchase from local businesses
- Donate to NGOs
- Raise Awareness about Global Poverty
- Educate Yourself
For a poor family, it is extremely difficult to climb the social ladder. Having limited income, education sometimes takes a backseat to meeting other needs.
To make sure that a child’s education is continued, you can sponsor a child’s education. You can also sponsor a child’s higher education, which will help them to reach greater heights in the future.
Instead of purchasing from multinational companies, you can shop locally and help their business to thrive. Purchasing locally, will not only help the business grow but also stimulate the local economy and produce employment. If it is not possible to purchase, you can also promote the business via social media platforms.
One might not find time to locate a small business or an underprivileged family. Hence, it is sometimes helpful to donate to NGOs, who will help the communities to thrive. There are a lot of NGOs working at regional, national and international levels. You can donate to any one of them to help.
You can also make people aware of the living conditions of abject poverty. You can share statistics on social media, or you can also host reading sessions or screening sessions, through books and movies on poverty. These sessions will impact the minds of people and might motivate people to contribute to the cause of eradicating poverty.
Living in metropolitan areas, sometimes it may be difficult for one to relate to the plight of the poor. One cannot be blamed for being ignorant about poverty. As charity starts at home, you can start by understanding the cause of poverty. The more you understand, the better advocate and ally you can be.
