Every year on October 11th, the International Day of the Girl Child is held to raise awareness of and find solutions to the problems girls face worldwide. It strives to support girls' rights and advocate for empowerment and well-being. The goal of this day is to educate, empower, and inspire girls so they can realise their full potential and make valuable contributions to society.

In India, according to UNICEF India, the sex ratio at birth decreased from 905 in 2001 to 899 girls born per 1,000 boys in 2011 (the normal is 40-960 girls per 1,000 boys), the under-five mortality rate for girls in India is 11 per cent higher for girls whereas globally, the under-five mortality rate is 9 per cent higher for boys, reflecting a 20 per cent abnormality in the under-five mortality rate for girls, and some 56 per cent of 15 to 19-year-old girls are anaemic compared to 30 per cent of boys.

International Day of the Girl Child for young girls was launched in 1995 when the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action highlighted the rights of girls. It was the most progressive step to advance equality and provide better opportunities for females worldwide. As a continuation of this, the United Nations General Assembly created the International Day of the Girl Child. The UN has worked to acknowledge the problems and challenges that young girls face today ever since that moment in December 2012.

The theme for this year is "Invest in Girls' Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well-being" which encapsulates the essence of International Day for the Girl Child. No matter the child's gender, education is the cornerstone of empowerment and a fundamental right. Everyone should place a strong emphasis on the significance of giving girls equitable access to high-quality education on this day. Their education gives them the information, abilities, and self-assurance they need to achieve their goals. It is a tool for ending the cycle of prejudice and poverty so that girls and their communities can have a better future.

Now just education but empowering these girls to be self-reliant and confident is also necessary. Giving girls the skills, opportunity, and resources they need to make wise decisions and take charge of their lives is part of empowerment. This includes having access to economic possibilities, healthcare, education, and decision-making processes. Empowered girls develop into strong, self-assured women who can affect and alter their environment. It is our shared duty to establish a supportive atmosphere that supports their development and nourishes their potential.
