Conservation for Future Generations: International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22 2023

Biodiversity (from Biological Diversity) refers to the variety of life on Earth at all levels, from genes to ecosystems, and can encompass the evolutionary, ecological, and cultural processes that sustain life. Every year on May 22 International Day for Biological Diversity is celebrated with a theme. This year the theme for Biological Diversity is Agreement to Action.

It aims to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. The reason for this theme this year is because of the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. This historic agreement set goals and concrete measures to stop and reverse the loss of nature by 2050.

Biodiversity allows ecosystems to work and flourish. For millions of years, many species of plants and animals have come together to live in the same habitats and over time they have balanced each other and the ecosystem together. If a species is removed from the ecosystem cycle, it eventually ruptures the balance, causing it to break down.

Our Biological Diversity has always been under threat since the beginning of Humankind. As we grow, we eradicate, modify, and use the land to accomplish our goals. Our changes frequently harm natural habitats, which also lessens their biodiversity. The primary threat to biodiversity is habitat loss, climatic changes, deforestation, invasive species and pollution . We use many natural resources, and the results can be terrible when we don't do so responsibly.

It is every human's responsibility to preserve and protect our natural resources. There are many things we can do to protect our biodiversity. Here are 4 methods to conserve biodiversity.

  1. Nature Preserves:
  2. Government regulation in the form of national parks is what nature preserves are. It preserves the natural habitat and provides a location where people can see the ecosystem. The idea is that this will encourage people to value nature more and put more pressure on the government to further protect other regions over time.

  3. Conservation Awareness:
  4. It is vital to raise awareness about the importance of our biodiversity, the value of diverse ecosystems and the threats it faces, educating people about the cause and the impact, and how a single responsible step can change the environment and foster a sense of protection for future generations.

  5. Habitat Conservation:
  6. We should try to protect and restore our natural environment, such as forests, wetlands, and coral reefs. By conserving, we ensure the survival of plants and animals, maintain ecological balance and protect the habitats that provide services for our existence.

  7. Individual Acts:
  8. As an individual, we can take a step forward to change our lifestyles, by using sustainable and organic products, minimising pollution, promoting renewable energy and participating in organisation activities like beach cleaning, donation and tree saplings.

We at Child Help Foundation also conduct programs related to the conservation of our environment, we regularly conduct beach cleaning activities, tree plantation, and awareness campaigns in schools for protecting our ecosystem. We hope this article would broaden your mind and take the initiative to conserve our environment.
