There are a few men on earth who could be a contender for ‘the greatest man to ever walk the earth’. Nelson Mandela was one of them. Born on 18th July 1918 in a small village in South Africa, few could have predicted that this child would change the face of South Africa as well as the entire world.
Dedicating his life to anti-colonial and African nationalist policies, Nelson Mandela was influential in eliminating apartheid in his nation of South Africa. His commitment to his goal even led him to serve twenty-seven years in prison, but the bars couldn’t deter or soften the willpower of Nelson Mandela. His work in his country changed the mindset of various people and reduced racism.
His policies combatted poverty and introduced land reforms. He was also the mediator in Pan Am Flight 103 bombing trial and served as the general secretary of the Non-Aligned Movement. After the end of his presidential term, he formed the Nelson Mandela Foundation, to reduce poverty and HIV/AIDS epidemic in his country.
Nelson Mandela even set up the ‘Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund’, which has worked tirelessly for the Survival, Safety, and Protection of children. He even lent his efforts to the Women’s movement in South Africa, working to reduce the pay gap between men and women and promoting scientific and environmental education.
When Nelson Mandela passed away on 5th December 2013, outpours and tributes came from influential figures around the globe, including Barack Obama, David Cameron and Ban ki-Moon.
Nelson Mandela might have passed away, but the lessons he has passed on have immortalized him and will stay with us forever. His lessons of forgiveness, compassion, and peace will preserve him for generations to come.
For his career as a reformist, Nelson Mandela has been honoured with numerous awards including India’s Bharat Ratna in 1990 and Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.
